The Expendables ranks amongst the worst films I have ever seen. And while I credit this cast for being racially diverse, if they were really going for a complete 80’s action hero throwback giving Sigourney Weaver or Linda Hamilton an invite would have been nice.

Remember that time I had a Rock and Pop God themed 21st in November and dressed as David Byrne in a suit three sizes too big and then Fae han asked me to upload pics to tumblr for six months because they don’t have facebook?

so apparently tumblr did something awesome and connected all our tumblr accounts to facebook. it’s not directly logged in to our facebook accounts but just in case deselect that shit under ‘blog settings’.

Just because a little box is checked, doesn’t make it opt-out. In fact, by needing you to voluntarily sign in and connect your facebook account for it to function, that makes this feature the definition of opt-in.

For an example of how a opt-out facebook would work, just see Spotify: you need to sign up with your facebook account, and it automatically sets all your plays, playlists, stats and anything else you do as public and will publish them automatically to facebook. This all occurs when you sign up for the service and then you have to go back and undo the damage. I.e. YOU HAVE TO OPT-OUT OF ITS FACEBOOK SERVICES.

The last time I checked, it was not a requirement to have facebook to have tumblr. And if you wanted to link you accounts, you could always untick the box before you do. That to me sounds like opt-in.

This is actually an improvement on previous incarnations of the tumblr fb app where simply linking them would mean auto-publishing. There was no tick-box. Thus if you have already linked your facebook profiles to your tumblrs and this worries you, then there are years of people who already hate you for spamming their news feed with your reblogs. This is the least of your problems.

Random thoughts on mobility, social justice blogging, generally angry posting

Being homebound for long periods of time leads to odd reflections about mobility, especially as someone who is still very young and mobile most of the time but can become very limited at unexpected times. Example: I’ve been constantly thinking back to a post that made it’s way around the tumblrs a few weeks back of a public staircase with a mobility ramp built into it. It was designed for use in Canada, I believe, and is clearly a prototype but most of tumblr declared it some sort of second coming for those with limited personal mobility.

Can I say, that as someone who only in the past two days has stopped leaning on every bench, table, handrail and anything of roughly 1 to 1.2m in height to keep from falling down due to the fact that there are a zillion nerve endings in your ass that freeze up your pelvis in weirder ways than you can imagine, that staircase looks like the scariest thing I have ever seen to go up. The steps are heavily displaced by the ramp (which looks way too steep in a fashion that makes going up it impossible unless I had a carer which is itself counter-intuitive to creating barrier-free design) and no consideration has been given to those that need auxillary support to get up stairs or ramps bar a few weak handrails (like, say, a large portion of the elderly population). And lets not go into the fact that the “ingenius” design would be a nightmare for someone who has a sight disability as both movement and architecture would be working in two planes at the same time.

It got me thinking about how a social blogging network can deem something freeing and liberating (or, likewise, oppressing) with little consideration to practical outcomes for those that it would directly affect. Frankly, the amount of space that the staircase used could have been better utilised to create a elevation that doesn’t even use stairs, but still has all the right support mechanism for all mobility types. The whole thing reminded me of the ramps v lifts debacle during Leslie Knope’s councillor campaign in Parks and Recreation: well intentioned ideas by people who have no understanding of how the product affects their target so much that even a well-presented stupid idea would be better.

I then proceeded to watch Parks and Rec again and felt much better.
